This Christmas Crack Bacon recipe is so good it’ll become an addiction in your house! The perfect combination of salty and sweet is so satisfying, there isn’t much more you could you hope for!
This maple bacon crack is made up of crackers, bacon, and chocolate! So delicious, easy to make and the perfect addition to any holiday cookie tray!
Christmas Crack Bacon
Bacon makes everything better. Right? I sure think so and one of the newest food trends is using bacon in sweet dishes, like Chocolate Bacon Saltine Toffee!
Traditional, old school saltine cracker toffee, but with a little added extra, including maple syrup!
I know, at first you have to wrap your head around it. Sounds a little wonky, but the salty combination of bacon and sweet maple syrup makes these bacon crackers an excellent sweet treat for the holiday season!
Judging by the success of my Bourbon Bacon Jam, Candied Bacon and Dark Chocolate Bacon Cookie Sandwiches (coming soon!), Chocolate Bacon Saltine Toffee is about to become your newest food addiction.
This is one of the easiest methods for making candy- you don’t even need a candy thermometer! And it’s always a huge hit no matter what occasion you make it for.
Ingredients
- Ritz Crackers or Saltine Crackers – While you can certainly use saltine crackers, like in the most traditional toffee candy recipes, I like using Ritz Crackers. They are buttery AND salty, making this classic treat even more decadent. Club crackers work well too.
- Butter – The crackers and bacon themselves are already pretty salty, so I opt to use unsalted butter here. If you want to add a little more salt at the end, you can always sprinkle a little on.
- Brown sugar – You can use either light brown sugar or dark brown sugar. This helps to create that caramelized layer that you love in this bacon crack recipe.
- Maple syrup – I’m going to say that the Aunt Jemima’s bottled version just won’t cut it for this Christmas Crack Bacon. If you want that real maple flavor, be sure to use real maple syrup for your maple caramel bacon crack.
- Bacon – Use your favorite bacon brand here. If you like crispy bacon, make sure to get a thinner cut. If you like yours a little chewy, get thick cut bacon slices.
- Milk chocolate melting wafers – I find that these melt the easiest, however you could use regular chocolate chips if that’s all you have on hand. Both work great.
- White chocolate melting wafers – Same here, I just like the way these melt, but you can use white chocolate chips, or omit it all together if you aren’t a fan of white chocolate.
How to Make Christmas Crack Bacon
- Prepare oven and rimmed baking sheet. Preheat oven and line a baking dish with parchment paper, carefully folding the edges so you can easily lay the crackers flat. You can also use silicone liners or heavy duty aluminum foil for easy removal.
- Crackers. Line baking dish with a single layer of crackers the crackers of your choice.
- Make toffee. In a medium saucepan, melt butter, brown sugar and maple syrup over medium heat, stirring frequently until fully combined and smooth. Do not boil.
- Add to crackers. Pour the brown sugar mixture on top of the crackers. Top with pieces of the cooked bacon.
- Bake. Bake, then remove from oven and allow to cool to room temperature.
- Chocolate. Melt both white chocolate and milk chocolate in plastic candy bags. Snip ends and drizzle over top of the bacon pieces. Place in the refrigerator until hardened. Remove parchment paper and cut Christmas Crack Bacon into squares.
Variations
- Add some heat – Adding a dash of red pepper flakes or even some black pepper or cayenne pepper will take this candy up a notch.
- Maple bacon – Take a step up from ordinary bacon and try using maple bacon instead. This will really enhance the maple flavor.
- Chocolate – Instead of regular milk and white chocolate, try using colored chocolates. Green and red are great for Christmas, but you can change up the colors for any holiday.
Storage and Freezing
You can store any Christmas Crack Bacon leftovers in an airtight container. They do not need to be refrigerated, so out on the counter or in the pantry is just fine.
I don’t recommend freezing this delicious treat. However, It’s so delicious that I doubt you’ll have any leftovers long enough to freeze anyways!
