Super simple and so cute, red, white and blue chocolate covered strawberries are a summery treat that just can’t be beat! All American Strawberries are perfect for Memorial Day cookouts or Fourth of July celebrations!
This delicious dessert using fresh strawberries is great alone or pair with with other 4th of july favorites like our Red, White and Blue Jello Shooters, 4th of July cupcakes or American Flag Sugar Cookie Cake.
Chocolate Dipped Strawberries
This chocolate dipped strawberry recipe brings a little fun to any event by sporting an all-American festive color scheme. Nothing screams “U.S.A” more than the good ‘ol red, white, and blue (and green… from the stems)!
These All-American Strawberries are very patriotic and only need three ingredients to make. Strawberries for the red, candy melts for the white, and sprinkles for the blue.
I used to call them 4th of July strawberries, but then I felt like it limited their potential. They’d really be great for any patriotic holiday- Labor Day, Memorial Day or any other time you need a red white and blue dessert.
Taking a mere 15 minutes to prepare – these patriotic strawberries are the perfect treat to bring to BBQs or serve after dinner by the campfire. Everyone will love this fun and festive dessert!
Why You’ll Love These All American Strawberries
I mean, what’s not to love about festive strawberries dipped in chocolate? Here are a few of our favorite reasons.
- Simple ingredients – You only need three, in fact, and what could be more simple and easy than that?
- Quick and easy – You only need a total of 15 minutes to make these beauties, and then you’re ready to enjoy.
- Fun and festive – While these specific strawberries are great for Independence Day or other patriatic celebration, you can change the colors to fit any holiday.
All American Strawberries Ingredients
Nothing beats a simple dessert, and when you only need 3 ingredients to make it, it doesn’t get much better than that.
- White candy melts – These are easily found in the baking aisle at your local grocery store. It also might be called melting white chocolate.
- Blue sprinkles – You can use any type of sprinkles- jimmies, sanding sugar or whatever you have on hand. I prefer sanding sugar for the texture.
- Strawberries – Large strawberries work best for this recipe. More surface area for the chocolate and sprinkles to stick to. You need to use fresh strawberries, not frozen.
How to Make All American Strawberries
When you need an easy dessert for entertaining, these strawberries are the best. Check out how easy they are to make!
- Wash and dry strawberries. The key to any chocolate covered strawberry is making sure it is dry. I recommend washing your strawberries and allowing them to air dry in the fridge for at least 2 hours prior to coating. You can also dab them off with a dry paper towel.
- Melt chocolate. Heat candy melts in double boiler or microwave in a microwave-safe bowl. Follow the package directions for the best results.
- Dip strawberries. Dip each strawberry into melted chocolate and then dip just the tip of the strawberry in a small bowl of blue sprinkles, about halfway up the chocolate layer.
- Allow to harden. Lay on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper or wax paper on a cookie sheet. Refrigerate until ready to serve.
Variations
There aren’t too many ways to customize this recipe if you’re looking for red white and blue strawberries, but here are a few options.
- Melted white chocolate – You can also use white chocolate chips or almond bark. In a double boiler, mix every 8 ounces with 2 teaspoons unsalted butter or shortening.
- Sprinkles – What I used was more like a blue sugar rather than sprinkles, but feel free to use jimmies or any other type of blue sprinkles you have.
- Different holidays – These aren’t just great for July 4th- change up the colors of the candy melts and sprinkles for occasions like Valentine’s Day, Mardis Gras, Halloween or baby showers.
Storage and Freezing
How To Store Chocolate Covered Strawberries
Store your dipped strawberries in an airtight container in a cool place at room temperature. No need to refrigerate.
Can You Freeze Chocolate Covered Strawberries?
I do not recommend freezing these All American Strawberries. The strawberries will sweat when they thaw and make a big mess.
Tips and Tricks
Making chocolate covered strawberries might seem simple, but check out these tips to ensure your success.
- Pick pretty berries. They don’t have to be the best shape, but at least not bruised or discolored.
- Refrigerate your berries, but when you go to dip them, let them come up to room temperature.
- The most common mistake is having wet berries. Chocolate can’t stick to the berries if they are wet. Dry them with a paper towel before dipping.
- Leave the leaves, these are your “handle”.
- Use a double boiler to prevent chocolate from overheating and getting all yucky. You can make your own by fitting a large stainless steel or glass mixing bowl over a small saucepan. Be careful to not burn yourself.
- Dip your berry in the chocolate, then give it a swirl and tap off excess chocolate on the side.
- Place on a piece of parchment paper or wax paper, NOT a cooling rack. The chocolate will drop around the grates and then you’ll have to peel them off, risking the chocolate breaking.
- Chill in the fridge to set for 10 minutes.
- Store berries at room temperature in a cool, dry place. If you keep them in the fridge, they will start to sweat or the chocolate will start to look chalky.
