If you enjoy fried green tomatoes, you will LOVE the Fried Green Tomato Sandwich. Combining fried green tomatoes, avocado, bacon, white cheddar and an egg makes the perfect ratios of savory and salty.
Ingredients
You should easily be able to find all of these fried green tomato sandwiches at your local grocery store.
- Fried green tomato – Fried green tomatoes are a classic southern recipe. They take this sandwich up a notch from using just a plain tomato slice. Different from red tomatoes, they aren’t totally ripe/
- Pumpernickel bread – You can really use any kind of bread that you prefer, but the flavor of pumpernickel is absolute perfection to me.
- Sharp white cheddar cheese – I prefer to slice my own cheese, but you can certainly buy cheese already sliced from grocery stores.
- Avocado – Make sure this is pitted and thinly sliced. I like the creaminess this adds to the fried green tomato blt.
- Bacon – I like to cut my bacon strips in half to better fit on the sandwich. I like crispy bacon, but cook yours to your desired doneness.
- Fried eggs – Adding a fried egg to my green tomato blt sandwiches is my favorite. I like mine over medium, but cook yours however you’d like.
Variations
There are plenty of ways for you to make this Fried Green Tomato Sandwich your own. Here are a few suggestions.
- Bread – You can truly use any type of bread you like. White bread or even a sourdough slice would be great swaps to make.
- Cheese – Instead of white cheddar, you could use mozzarella, provolone, pepper jack or even pimento cheese.
- Sauce – If you know me, you know how much I love a good sauce! A remoulade sauce would be the perfect addition to this delicious sandwich.
How to Make a Fried Green Tomato Sandwich
Turn one of your favorite southern staples into a delectable sandwich with these simple steps.

- Add cheese. Top slices of bread with one slice of cheese each.
- Bake until bread is warm and cheese is turning opaque and starting to melt.
- Add other toppings. Add two slices of fried green tomato, avocado, bacon and an egg to each sandwich.
- “Tighten it up” as my nephew says….. meaning smoosh down all fillers to a height appropriate to stuff in your mouth. Enjoy!
How to Make Fried Green Tomatoes
Just in case you’ve never made my fried green tomato recipe, the steps are below.
- Prepare dredging bowls. Place the egg whites in a shallow bowl for dredging. Combine the cornmeal and salt in another shallow bowl for dredging.
- Heat oil. Heat the vegetable oil in a medium skillet over medium-high heat.
- Coat tomatoes in beaten egg and breading. Working in batches to avoid crowding the pan, dredge a tomato slice in egg white and then cornmeal mixture and place directly into the hot oil.
- Fry on each side until cornmeal is lightly browned and formed a crispy crust. Tomatoes will should still be firm.
- Drain on paper towels. Remove fried tomato slices to a wire rack over a baking sheet lined with paper towels to remove excess grease.
Storage
How to Store Fried Green Tomato Sandwich
Unfortunately, this sandwich doesn’t store well. The bread slices and fried tomatoes will get soggy quickly. I recommend making one sandwich at a time to prevent leftovers.
