How do you make a cup of homemade hot chocolate even more fun? With homemade hot chocolate stir sticks!
What You’ll Need
All you need to make these fun sticks are a few easy-to-find ingredients.
- Peppermint sticks or wooden sticks – You can easily find these at the grocery store — look in the baking aisle for the wooden sticks, rock candy sticks or wooden lollipop sticks. You may be able to find them at a craft store, too, but I buy them online.
- Melted chocolate – Use any type of chocolate you like — melted milk chocolate, dark chocolate, and white chocolate chips all work.
- Mini dehydrated marshmallows – Mini marshmallows are the perfect garnish for the outside of the stirrers.
Variations
There are lots of ways to make these easy hot chocolate stirrers your own!
- Sprinkles – Use seasonal sprinkles for any holiday or gathering.
- Crushed Peppermint – Swap out the marshmallows for crushed peppermint candies or crushed candy canes.
- Spoons – Instead of sticks, use wooden spoons.
- Almond Bark – Crumble up almond bark and use it to coat the sticks.
- Decorator Sugar – For a sparkly and colorful version, roll the chocolate-covered sticks in decorator’s sugar.
- Salt – For a sweet and salty treat, try sprinkling a little salt onto the chocolate. Any number of salts will work well — try sea salt or Himalayan pink salt.
- Gift – Wrap them up in cellophane and tie them with a ribbon to give them as gifts.
How to Make Homemade Chocolate Stir Sticks
When serving hot cocoa to friends and family, I like to go a bit above and beyond handing them a basic mug of hot chocolate. I like to include something a little special, like these Hot Chocolate Stir Sticks.
- Coat the sticks. Melt the chocolate and use it to completely cover the wooden sticks or peppermint sticks.
- Add the marshmallows. Roll the chocolate-covered sticks in the marshmallows.
- Allow the chocolate to set. Place each of the stirrers on a prepared plate lined with parchment paper and let the chocolate harden.
- Serve. Add to a mug of hot chocolate, coffee, or hot milk.

Thanks for another wonderful recipe. Grand kids loved them.
I’m going to try this for my daughter’s birthday party. Could I use regular miniature marshmallows instead of dehydrated?
You can, they are just a tad larger than the dehydrated ones.
Question: I’m making a lot of these for a wedding open house and am wondering what kind of chocolate I should buy. You weren’t too specific in the directions. Thank you very much.
Hi Kathy- there is info about chocolate in the actual post. I would use a chocolate made for melting, like almond bark or candy melts.
How many does this recipe make? I’m making there for gift bags for a wedding shower along with hot chocolate packets.
Hi! Each batch (3 ounces of chocolate) will make approximately 10 sticks.
Looks amazing! How early in advance can I make it for a party?
Hi Hina, probably a a few days. I’d keep them in the fridge or in a cool dry place. Remember chocolate has the tendency to sweat a little if it gets too cold.
These are so fun and adorable! They make great gifts or as just a way to make any cup of cocoa feel a little more fancy!
We have a 9 year old foster kiddo living with us and he LOVES hot chocolate. These stir sticks are such a fun way to make it feel extra special!
