Once it becomes apple season, I’m ready for all of the apple desserts, especially pie. This apple slab pie using apple pie filling is one of the easiest types of pie you can make.
If you’ve ever scrolled past any kind of pie recipe because it seems like a lot of work, I can relate. I’ve never been a fan of making pie crusts — but this recipe is different from a regular pie.
For this slab pie, there’s no dough-making or pinching of edges and no fancy top crust — just a delicious crumble topping that comes together quickly. As easy as making apple pie cinnamon rolls!
Plus, since this recipe uses apple pie filling, you don’t need to wait for the right time of year to make this pie. While it’s great for the holiday season, it’s also the perfect dessert to make for large gatherings all year long. Like apple bread and apple pie had a deliciously east baby.
What is Slab Pie?
Slab pie is simply an easier, larger version of traditional apple pie. While a classic pie is baked in a round pie dish, slab pie is made in a rectangular pan.
Making a slab pie saves time because there’s no need to fuss with a lattice crust or deal with a soggy topping. This one uses a streusel topping instead.
Bonus: There’s way more pie to go around when you make a slab pie!
How to Serve Apple Pie
Apple pie is often best served warm. Just give it a few minutes after it’s been baked, then slice and serve. Of course no one will say no to a scoop of vanilla ice cream, salted caramel ice cream or a drizzle of caramel sauce. Bourbon sauce or maple cream are also great.
You can also easily reheat it the next day. Just microwave a slice in intervals or place it in the oven or toaster oven.
Why You’ll Love Apple Slab Pie
If you like pie but you don’t love the intricacies of making it from scratch, you’re going to love this apple slab pie.
- Easy – There’s nothing complicated about making this simple pie, and the ingredients are all easily located at the grocery store.
- Customizable – There are lots of ways to change the recipe for your own palate or dietary needs.
- Versatile – Serve this pie at nearly any type of party or event.
Ingredients
These simple ingredients are all you need to whip up this easy apple slab pie recipe.
- Refrigerated Pie Crusts – Be sure to thaw the pie crusts before you begin to prepare the slab pie.
- Apple Pie Filling – Using a store-bought sweet apple pie filling cuts down on time making this pie.
- Flour – All-purpose flour helps to keep the pie from sticking to the counter. It also helps to build the structure of the streusel topping.
- Brown Sugar – Brown sugar gives the topping its sweetness.
- Quick Cooking Oats – These help to provide texture in the topping. The oats also help to soak up extra liquid.
- Apple Pie Spice – This spice adds even more warm flavor to the pie.
- Coarse Kosher Salt – Salt enhances the sweetness of the brown sugar.
- Unsalted Butter – Be sure to use cold butter and to cube it before adding it to the bowl.

What to Serve with Apple Slab Pie
Apple slab pie is perfectly paired with anything you’d serve with a traditional pie. Spoon a generous amount of whipped cream on top, drizzle caramel sauce over it (we particularly like bourbon caramel sauce and pecan caramel sauce), or serve a big scoop of vanilla ice cream alongside it.
Variations
Since this pie is so simple, there are plenty of ways to switch it up.
- Spice – Instead of apple pie spice, try using pumpkin pie spice.
- Flour – Use a gluten-free version or your favorite alternative.
- Sugar – Use white sugar in place of brown, or choose your favorite alternative sweetener.
- Citrus – Stir a little lemon juice into the apple pie filling to give it a little brightness. The tart acidity balances the sweetness of the filling.
- Eggs – Brush an egg wash onto the pie dough edges for shininess and more golden brown color.
- Dough – If you prefer, you can make your own dough instead of buying store-bought.
Storage and Freezing
While you can store apple pie at room temperature for a couple of days, it stays fresh longer in the refrigerator.
Refrigerator: Refrigerator apple slab pie for up to 4 days.
